Sea of Sunflowers
—inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s fascination of sunflowers
The pride of the peacock is the glory of God,
but watch! Witness breeze brush this field
of Helianthus annuus—how morning light
stains the green beneath! The grandeur
of wind skimming skin as it tickles waves
of imploding stars. Van Gogh loved them.
Legend goes he was inspired by a painting
by a Japanese. Did you know Amaterasu
was the sun goddess in Shinto? I wonder
if she smiled when the Dutch brought them
from Holland, just as how we have arrived
to this field again—a beryl sea of starfish.
The cosmos swirl before us. Do you wonder
if you will drown tonight? You know better
to keep your mind below water for too long.
